Compo unlikely for businesses hit by roadworks By Julia Evans BUSINESSES HARD hit by roadworks are unlikely to get any compensation from the city council. In a city council report, staff have said it was “not considered feasible” for it to hand out rates relief or a monetary grant to businesses hard hit by nearby roadworks. It also questioned how much of declining sales revenue could be directly attributed to city council roadworks. Changes in market trends, local demographics, traffic flows and competition would also have to be considered, said the report. The idea came about when city councillor Deon Swiggs said in June that many businesses in his ward have struggled to make ends meet, due to city council roadworks taking away their parking. It was reported that Riccarton Rd businesses The Running Bull and Subway were forced to close due to ongoing roadworks. At its June 20 meeting, city councillors called for an investigation into some form of compensation – whether that be through a rates rebate or grant. •Turn to page 4

HEY DAY: Trevor Williams playing for Hornby in the 60s and 70s. Inset: In more recent times.

Hornby goal-kicking great passes on By Andrew King A HORNBY rugby league goal-kicking legend from yesteryear has died after a battle with illness. Trevor Williams, 72, was known for his prodigious goalkicking ability during the 1960s and 1970s. He won the Turner and Le Brun Cup for most goals in 1971 and 1972 and was sportsman of

the year in 1971. He could kick a goal from inside his own half, frustrating the opposition when they conceded penalties 60mplus from their goal posts. Said former teammate and coach Brian Langton: “I knew if he was in the side and we got a penalty anywhere in their half, there was about a 95 per cent chance it would go over in the wet or fine.” Mr Langton said he was in

the same kicking mould as Don “The Boot” Clarke, who scored 202 points in 89 games for the All Blacks between 1956-64. He said Williams was a “big, strapping man”, who was comfortable on the “paddock” and could play anywhere you put him. “He played most of his footy at fullback, but you easily put him wherever and he would not let you down,” he said. “He was well liked and re-

spected at the club and he will definitely be missed,” he said. Williams’ son Brad said he was a classic Kiwi dad who “loved a beer and a punt.” “He had a great life. He was a very caring honest man who had a really good nature. He went way too early,” he said. Williams also coached at Hornby and the Halswell club. •Editor’s note, page 2

Tuesday August 1 2017 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

I REMEMBER as a young kid in the 70s going to the showgrounds and watching an uncle, Gary, play league for Papanui. There was also a guy I vaguely remember kicking goals from inside his own half for Hornby, a big bloke called Trevor Williams. He’d take a handful of steps back, walk straight in and over it went. Sadly, Trevor passed away recently and today on page 1 we speak to another Hornby great, Brian Langton, about his old teammate. There were great days at the showgrounds during that era, and before, and of course into the 1990s with the fantastic rivalries between Hornby and Halswell. And thanks to Halswell stalwart Darryl Hawker for letting me know Trevor had passed on. Trevor was involved in that club, too. – Barry Clarke

West End actor grew up in Ilam Returned for one-man show about his UK deportation By Georgia O’Connor-Harding BUILDING AN arts career on London’s West End is a far cry from reality for most – but not for Christchurch performer Nic Kyle. Taken under Broadway star Elaine Paige’s wing, Kyle, 30, led a soaring four-year stint, performing in sell-out shows in one of the biggest commercial theatre scenes in the world. But it all came to abrupt halt when the actor, who grew up in Ilam, found himself being deported. Kyle was in the United Kingdom for two years before deciding to get a defacto visa. “I was seeing an English girl and we decided to go into a partner defacto visa which in hindsight was probably not a good idea,” he said. THe relationship broke up but Kyle decided to keep the visa. THe visa issue was flagged when Kyle was being checked

Kyle was locked away from midnight to 9am in the morning and given five days to get out of London. He took off to Germany, landing the lead role in The English Theatre Frankfurt’s production of Spamalot before

heading home to Christchurch where he has been for the past month. It was in Germany where he met his girlfriend Canadian Sophie Schmidt, a professional football player who is a midfielder for FFC Frankfurt in the German national league. Kyle said meeting Schmidt was a complete coincidence as both her club and The English Theatre Frankfurt were sponsored by the same bank. “THe team always come to the show every year and have a

mix and mingle with the cast afterwards and we always go to their game the week afterwards,” he said. Last week, Kyle made light of getting kicked out of the UK in his original one-man show Deported. For the second element of the show, he brought in city performers Matt Hudson and Jack Marshall to take part in dark comedy Coffin. Back in London, Kyle performed in the sell-out West End premier of the show. He was given the rights to perform the show after writer Elliott Langsdon found out he had been deported. Kyle will be heading back to Europe to travel with his girlfriend before he decides what to do next. “I am not happy I got deported but it has worked out really well . . . if I hadn’t, would I had ever met Sophie? Who knows?” he said. Kyle’s career on the West End began after he sung for Paige during her New Zealand tour. “I was going to move to Melbourne and she was like, no you are talking s***. I am going to help get you to London . . . and she helped get me an agent,” he said.

In Brief TRAFFIC DELAYS Delays of up to 20min are possible at the Russley Rd and Memorial Ave intersection from August 4-6. Motorists travelling to and from the airport are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra travel time. Alternatively, motorists should consider taking other routes such as Harewood Rd or the southern airport access road. CLUB LEASE RENEWED Burnside Rugby Football Club has some certainty over its future at Burnside Park. The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board approved the club’s renewed lease of the rooms at the park for the next 33 years. The lease is broken into three terms of 11 years so the club will have to seek renewal at the end of each term. NEW LONE STAR The city’s fourth Lone Star restaurant will become the latest tenant at Harewood’s Spitfire Square. The new restaurant is on track to open at the airport development in September. The flooring has been completed and the kitchen area has just been finished. The restaurant is currently seeking to obtain its liquor licence through the city council.

Getting active for health

Another $100k to help Maddie

JACKIE HOULE is a changed woman compared to six months ago. Suffering from social anxiety, diabetes and struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister seven years ago, Ms Houle was at a crossroads as she went to her doctor’s office. A brave decision to try the green prescription’s eight-week Be Active programme for people who want to increase their level of physical activity, has Ms Houle spending more time on her newly-purchased exercise cycle than her couch. Participants in the programme try out a range of activities such as aqua jogging, gym, sports and dance. They are supported by Sport Canterbury staff and discuss motivation, healthy eating and managing stress – topics that support a healthy lifestyle “I’ve lost 22 pounds (10kg), the panic attacks that I used to suffer, particularly in social situations, are not nearly as bad and my blood sugar levels have dropped. I’ve even purchased an exercycle which I definitely wouldn’t have done prior to the (Be Active) programme,” she said. Ms Houle, who moved from her native Canada 11 years ago to be with her partner, says her

MORE THAN $100,000 has been raised at a fundraising evening to help West Melton teenager Maddie Collins. The event at the Addington Raceway last week drew a crowd of more than 300 people in support of Maddie, who is in urgent need of a kidney transplant. She is waiting to hear if she can get a transplant at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, United States, which is expected to cost $750,000.

sister’s death had added to her stress. She has not been back to Canada since the tragedy but thanks to her progress over the past nine months, she is planning a trip back home next year. “That’s all been part of it,” she said: “Losing my sister made me really depressed for a very long time; we were very close. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and my health and received so

much support. I’m glad I took the chance and signed up for the programme.” The Be Active programme begins this week in Aranui, Lincoln, Spreydon and Bishopdale. Ms Houle encouraged anyone to give it a go regardless of fitness level, age or health issues. People can refer themselves into the programme or talk to their GP about a green prescription.

The $100k adds to the $170,000 already raised for Maddie through Givealittle pages and community events, bringing the total now raised to more than $270,000. Maddie is in Auckland’s Starship Hospital with her mother, Sarah Manson Collins, this week having more tests and getting advice about Maddie’s medication and dialysis treatment. Mrs Manson Collins said the fundraising event was amazing. “It was a fantastic night and it was great because everybody got to laugh,” she said.

Compensation unlikely for businesses hit by road works •From page 1 But a staff report that will be tabled at a city council committee meeting says compensation via both methods is unfeasible. Staff said it would be too difficult to work out the specific objective criteria that would be required to define the extent of disruption to qualify for relief. Difficulties working out the amount of rates remission that would be provided and the length of time it should be applied were also cited as part of the reasoning.

NEW RELEASE New Benchmark for Recreational Jetboating

A grant would be easier to establish but it would still be too hard to work out who was entitled. “Financial compensation by establishing a new type of grant would be more feasible . . . however, there would remain a significant practical difficulty in defining who should qualify,” the report said. It is recommended the committee receive the information in the report at Wednesday’s meeting but no further action is likely to be taken.

Residents win liquor store battle By Julia Evans “WHEN A neighbourhood rallies, we can do anything.” That was reaction of Harewood resident Colin Fussell after a long-running bid to set up a liquor store in Trafford St failed. Nearby residents had opposed the Harewood Bottle Store fighting it tooth and nail for more than eight months. Businessman Samarth Rajeshkumar Limbachiya’s application for a liquor licence to operate the Harewood Bottle Store was declined by the city council’s district licensing committee last week. Said Mr Fussell when contacted by Western News : “I’m swinging from the rafters.” But the battle may not be over as the decision could be subject to an appeal by Mr Limbachiya’s if he applies within 10 working days. The end of that appeal period is August 9. Western News has not been able to make contact with Mr Limbachiya to see if he will appeal. And Mr Fussell said although that comes with the territory, the residents would be ready for another fight so it would be a waste of the applicant’s money.

The battle is over for Trafford St residents Bruce Tulloch (left) and Colin Fussell. PHOTO: ANDREW KING

“Our opposition will be ready and waiting,” Mr Fussell said. He and fellow Trafford St resident Bruce Tulloch championed a petition against the application that was signed by 1144 people. And the city council received 86 further public objections before the hearing on July 13 and 14. Mr Tulloch said there are more than enough options for

buying liquor in the area so there was no logic behind granting yet another licence. He thanked everyone who had contributed to the campaign. Mr Fussell said while this battle was won, the war is not over. “The battle has been won but we need to address the greater issue in other neighbourhoods who are facing the same problem,” Mr Fussell said.

In its report, the licensing committee said granting the application would be detrimental to the neighbourhood. “We have formed the opinion that amenity and good order would be reduced by more than a minor amount. The foreseen reduction may not be great but it is likely to impact on the people who live in the vicinity,” the report said.

Dementia care centre planned for Avonhead retiree village A NEW retirement village planned for Avonhead will offer specialised care for people with dementia. Summerset has purchased land to build its third Christchurch retirement village, which will include a memory care centre. Chief executive Julian Cook said the 9.5ha property on Hawthornden Rd is close to the Russley golf course and other recreational areas. “We are thrilled to be able to secure this land,” Mr Cook said. The memory care centre – a new concept to support residents living with dementia – will provide one bedroom apartments in a secure environment. “We are the first (company) in New Zealand to launch this style of apartment living for those living with dementia,” he said. The new Avonhead retirement home will become a thriving community with more than 240 homes planned for the site. It will include two and three bedroom villas, apartments and serviced apartments, as well as high quality rest home and hospital care.

The new classroom block was blessed last week and offers a nod to the school’s history. “The committee that was established to choose a name for the new building loved the idea of cherishing the history of the college, “ principal Deborah Brosnahan said. The college has named its new building Kia Toa, which was the name of the original late 1800s homestead the Sisters of Mercy purchased as part of the Peer St property in 1918. “We understand Kia Toa means to be brave and to store. By Julia Evans HORNBY HIGH students were part of a special Mihi Whakatau, a Maori welcoming for the new Belfast School principal. Sue Elley, who is taking up the role, said it was the most wonderful experience. She replaces veteran principal, Peter Simpson, who sat at the helm of the school for 23 years.

Belfast pupils welcomed Mrs Elley with a kapa haka performance and speeches. And students and staff from Hornby High School, where she worked as the assistant principal for four years, were also there. The Hornby students performed as a kapa haka group and head boy Billy Roper gave a goodbye speech in Te Reo. “It brought a really nice clo-

sure to that part of my life. My previous students physically took me to the new school,” she said. Above all, the mihi really introduced Mrs Elley to the overwhelming sense of community that the Belfast School has. “It’s such a strong community based school . . . Belfast isn’t really a suburb, it is its own town on the edge of a

city,” she said. But the new role, will bring some a new challenges that Mrs Elley said she’s very excited to begin. It’s her first time as a principal. However, she said with the support of the school community and collegian of experienced principals she’s in contact with, she’s in good hands.

By Andrew King BURNSIDE HIGH recorded their first win of the season in the UC Championship with a tight 33-31 victory over MidCanterbury Combined on Saturday. With two rounds to go, it would have been a nervous time for the boys from Memorial Ave as they contemplated a potentially winless season. Down 18-0 at halftime, the thought of another defeat must have stirred something inside Burnside as they came out and scored 33 points in the second half giving them a bonus point win and moving them off the bottom of the table. St Thomas tried playing catchup against Nelson yesterday, losing 23-20 after the round 12 game was postponed due to the recent deluge on July 22. The loss follows their 17-12 defeat at the hands of St Andrew’s on Saturday.

SENIOR LIVING Osteoporosis is a serious condition

GO-Advanced ...but research shows it can be reversed! Omega-PC Fish Oil It is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with a higher amounts of omega-3 in their diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and, in many cases, better overall health. Recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. Studies have shown GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits.

Osteoporosis is not taken as a serious condition by most people! Most people don’t realise they have osteoporosis until a fracture happens, as there are usually no signs or symptoms. Fractures can commonly be debilitating with chronic pain and can lead to early mortality. Fractures kill more women than all gynaecological cancers put together and one in six women taken to hospital with a hip fracture, will not come out alive and men fare even worse. Around one in three women and one in twelve men are affected with osteoporosis. The most common osteoporotic fractures are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip. Vertebral collapse is a compression fracture and causes back pain often with shooting pains due to compression of the nerves. Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a stooped posture, loss of height and chronic pain with reduced mobility. One group were also given 680mg/day of strontium. After the three year study the strontium group showed an unheard of average bone growth of 8.1%. BREAKTHROUGH AGAINST OSTEOPOROSIS Osteoporosis, the weakening of the bone is a serious health threat that often leads to severe pain, fractures & early mortality. Research has found the bones can be re-mineralised & strengthened when the required nutrients are present. Minerals calcium, magnesium & vitamins D3 & K2 are essential but are not enough in many cases. A missing link appears to be the mineral strontium. Research shows strontium to positively affect bone density. - Supports strong healthy bones, teeth & nails - Is a naturally occurring mineral often lacking in the modern diet - Found in healthy bones & teeth but lacking in people with osteoporosis

HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. Ensure your heat pump is installed by an accredited installer. This will not only ensure correct installation of your heat pump, but also validate the manufacturers warranty. Other things to consider when choosing a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi capabilities. Heating is a major investment in your home and it is vital to get the right advice. Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply, installation and servicing of all major brands of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as to which system will suit your application the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no obligation quote and will come to your home to see what is required. Visit our website at www.enviromaster.co.nz.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

ve Remo ells ng sm i k o o c am! e t s d an

wasted using a traditional positive pressure system is recovered, resulting in significant energy savings and therefore lower heating or cooling costs. Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation systems have been considerably more expensive than traditional positive pressure systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390 balanced pressure system can be installed for a similar price as a traditional positive pressure system. dental care Six fabulous years and still going strong! The team of Fendalton Dental Surgery takes this opportunity to thank their loyal patients, the supportive Canterbury dental fraternity and the wonderful local community. They celebrate yet another glorious anniversary after being forced to relocate to this premises after the earthquakes in 2011. It used to be called Cambridge Dental Surgery while they were in the CBD but since moving to this lovely Fendalton suburb in July 2011. Fendalton Dental Surgery, on the high profile corner of Idris & Glandovey Roads has been looking after the dental needs of the local community as well as the wider Christchurch area since 2011. Dentists Keith Chiang and Zohnia McNeill and Oral Health Therapist, Amy Lee offer a complete range of dental and oral care services, all in a very calm and relaxed environment. Supporting them are dental nurses Simone and Jola and the ever-efficient highly organised practice manager, Aysha who bring with them their very own style and range of competencies in each and every aspect. “We listen carefully to what our patients tell us so we can address each of their dental problems and help them achieve
